Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is highly organized and efficient. On the day of trekking, everyone gathers at park headquarters where they are assigned to eight person groups which then drive to various trailheads to visit different habituated gorilla groups.

The hikes to reach a habituated gorilla family can be anything from easy (30 – 45 minutes each way, easy terrain) to more challenging (up to 2 hours with lots of climbing and buchwacking). Each visitor will be assigned a gorilla family depending on their fitness level and interest.

There is a chance to hire local porters at the trailheads, these local people offer their services for $10 – $ 15 each. They will carry your backpack, help you over the mud if needed and water over your bag while you are with the gorillas.  Services of a porter will make your gorilla trekking experience in Rwanda a bit easy as the experience can take up to eight hours. Also, by hiring a porter you be supporting the local community.

Although you are meant to keep a respectful distance, given these are wild animals. It is not uncommon for them to come right up to you. A mother and a baby might walk right in front of you and tap on your knee which will feel unreal. The overall experience is profound, a unique communion with nature that leaves visitors moved by the beauty and vulnerability of these magnificent creatures and their habitat.
