Detailed Itinerary of 8 Days Rwanda Wildlife Safari

Day 1: Arrival to Kigali International Airport

Your Rwanda Safari journey starts with pick up at Kigali International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Kigali.

Day 2: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park

After breakfast, depart for Nyungwe Forest in southern Rwanda with a stop for lunch in Huye. In Huye, you will visit the Ethnographic Museum of Rwanda – formerly the national museum of Rwanda and learn about the culture and history of the Rwandan people.

Arrive in Nyungwe in the evening, check in at your lodge, enjoy dinner and have an overnight.

Day 3: Chimpanzee Trekking and Canopy Walk

Today we meet the playful chimpanzees in the ancient rainforests of Nyungwe Forest. After briefing conducted by a ranger guide, you will head into the forest looking for chimpanzees. The trek takes approximately 2 to 4 hours or more depending on movement of the chimpanzees and where they spent their previous night.

When you locate the chimpanzee troop, you will spend one hour watching them feed and groom each other. Return to your lodge for lunch and in the afternoon, head to Uwinka trail head for a canopy walk as you explore the park more and enjoy aerial views of Nyungwe Forest.

Day 4: Colobus Monkey Trekking and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Start your day with breakfast at the lodge and head out for a colobus monkey trekking experience and later depart for Volcanoes National Park in Northern Rwanda. Along the journey, enjoy sights of Lake Kivu and winding roads in the land of a thousand hills.

Enjoy en-route lunch and when you arrive in the park, check in at your lodge and spend the rest of the day at rest, have dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5: Gorilla Trekking Experience

Today we meet the mountain gorillas in the dense jungles of the Virunga ranges. After a delicious breakfast at your lodge, meet your driver and head to the park headquarters in Kinigi for briefing about gorilla trekking. You will be assigned a range and a gorilla family to trek, then head into the forest looking for mountain gorillas.

The trek takes approximately 2-4 hours or more depending on the movement of the gorillas and where they spent their previous night. Spend one hour in their presence watching them play, feed and groom each other.

After this experience, return to your lodge for lunch and in the afternoon, visit the Iby’Iwacu Village for a cultural experience.

Day 6: Golden Monkey Trekking and Transfer to Akagera National Park

Wake up early for breakfast and head to Volcanoes National Park for golden monkey trekking, join other visitors for briefing and head into the forest searching for the beautiful golden monkeys living in the bamboo region of this mountainous park. Spend an hour in their presence as you observe their way of life in the forest as they feed and hop from one tree branch to another.

After this experience, leave for Akagera National Park with short stopovers along the way for pictures and use of washrooms.

Day 7: Akagera National Park Safari

Today we explore Akagera National Park, the only savannah park in Rwanda located in north eastern region of the country along the border with Tanzania. Akagera is home to several big mammals including the Big Five – lion, leopard, cape buffaloes, elephants and rhinos, giraffes, waterbucks among others which you will see during the game drive.

Enjoy lunch at your lodge and in the afternoon, go for a boat ride on Lake Ihema. You will enjoy amazing sights of the calm waters as well as water wildlife such as hippos and crocodiles, and several water birds congregating along the shores of the lake. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 8:  Departure

Today is the last day of your safari in Rwanda. Start your day with breakfast at your lodge then transfer to Kigali International Airport for your departure flight back home.
